In honor of International Women’s Day‘s 2015 Theme: Make it Happen and #PaintitPurple campaign, we’re sharing this image of some beautiful bridesmaids as well as the bouquets we designed for them to carry in all shades of, what else? PURPLE!
What is International Women’s Day?
All around the world, International Women’s Day (IWD) represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. BOOM. That’s it, that’s all. Important to remember every day but TODAY it’s a global statement we’re happy to participate in. In some countries, like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women’s Day is a national holiday.
Make It Happen is the 2015 theme which encourages effective action for advancing and recognizing women. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911 and each year IWD is celebrated on March 8. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organizations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day.
Why purple?
From 1908, the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in Great Britain adopted the color scheme of purple, white and green to symbolize the plight of the Suffragettes. In case you aren’t familiar with the term, or just don’t remember your high school history lessons, Suffragettes campaigned for women’s right to vote. The word ‘Suffragette’ is derived from the word “suffrage” meaning the right to vote. International Women’s Day honors the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women’s success, and reminds us all of inequities still to be addressed and eradicated across the globe.
PURPLE POWER! Specifically, purple symbolizes justice and dignity – two values strongly associated with women’s equality to this day. The three colors were, and still are, used for banners, flags, rosettes and badges to show solidarity. Like many other businesses, EVANTINE DESIGN has chosen to take part in today’s celebration if only by honoring women through a few beautiful images shared across our social media.
